Lesson 3

Identifying set, costume and make-up needs

Upstream of any audiovisual production, it is necessary to identify all the needs so that filming can take place on schedule: large sets, all kinds of costumes, realistic or fanciful make-up, etc.

Rather than limiting ourselves to the new, it may be worthwhile to turn to the circular economy by giving life to materials that have already been created and used. This saves money and resources, limits the environmental impact of production and avoids waste.

How can you identify production needs responsibly?

Resources are becoming increasingly scarce. This makes it all the more attractive to opt for reuse and second-hand rather than new items to meet the needs of a set and costume shoot:

  • Visit recycling facilities and other second-hand shops;
  • Hire and/or repair sets, props and costumes;
  • Use FSC- or PEFC-certified wood for sets, and Ecolabel paints;
  • Select ISO14001 or EMAS certified suppliers of decorative materials;
  • Contact the appropriate channels to recycle your used equipment.

As audiovisual production is the professional sector that uses the highest volume of make-up, using more natural alternatives can have a significant impact on the environmental footprint of your shoot:

  • Favour any natural source of make-up;
  • Avoid all toxic products that are harmful to the skin and to air quality;
  • Opt for washable cotton pads;
  • Take care with waste disposal.
