Responsible management of audiovisual production and post-production encompasses a number of areas of focus: inclusion, accessibility, “all-digital” sobriety and the management and reduction of waste produced.

How can you manage your filming and post-production responsibly?

Audiovisual productions are a reflection of our society. They must therefore meet the needs of all populations, in all their geographical and socio-cultural diversity, religion, age and gender:

  • Select the members of your teams carefully according to all the inclusion criteria;
  • Include people with disabilities;
  • Make sure that the same criteria are applied to production workers;
  • Take care of physical accessibility at filming locations;
  • Systematise subtitling for the hearing impaired.

In the space of two decades, digital technology has taken over the entire field of audiovisual production, with exponential growth in consumption for high resolution, the cloud and real-time broadcasting. Whether for filming, post-production or broadcasting, “all-digital” has impacts that can be mitigated.

To use “all-digital” soberly:

  • Use strictly necessary equipment;
  • Select high-performance batteries and ensure that they are recycled;
  • Send low-resolution files;
  • Limit the storage of versions on servers;
  • Systematically sort archived files.

At every stage of audiovisual production, waste accumulates.

To treat waste wisely:

  • Integrate waste sorting by identifying upstream recycling channels;
  • Ensure that electronic equipment can be repaired, recycled or even reused;
  • Identify the subsequent use of decorative elements;
  • Manage surplus food, with local associations and/or processing channels;
  • Clearly communicate the location and use of bins on the set;
  • Dispose of waste in accordance with local regulations.

As well as measuring the environmental impact of your audiovisual production, using a reliable measuring instrument or a green manager, it may be worthwhile communicating the improved sustainability of your productions to as many people as possible.

This will enable you to receive feedback, and therefore to improve even further:

  • Identify all the targets for communication, such as employees, partners and public authorities;
  • Identify eco-responsible actions at filming locations with attractive signage;
  • Encourage exchanges to feed the continuous improvement process;
  • Produce useful material (trailers, clips, “making of”, etc.) to highlight good shooting practice;
  • Adopt the principles of responsible communication: low-impact communication tools; proven, non-stigmatising content, to inspire new virtuous practices!
