While the pyramidal model of traditional management implies direct, vertical decision-making, collective modes of collaboration require multiple, horizontal decisions. Governance looks at leadership, participation and engagement, and identifies the areas of responsibility and decision-making functions within an organisation. It also allows the interactions between decision-makers to be mapped, so as to make the system more efficient without weakening the various managers.

It can also be used to map the interactions between decision-makers, so as to make the system more efficient without weakening the individual managers.

How can we ensure appropriate governance with stakeholders?

A few rules for becoming an open and caring leader:

  • Surround yourself with people who are competent, motivated and complementary who will enjoy working together and alongside you, and seek to create cohesion within your team;
  • Share an inspiring and motivating vision that will unite efforts around common goals;
  • Know how to lead: guide your team towards common goals by defining a clear strategy, giving precise and sensible instructions, and motivating and encouraging your colleagues;
  • Be a positive influence by setting a good example;
  • Find the right arguments to convince your team members rather than imposing your ideas on them;
  • Listen to your colleagues to nuance your decisions;
  • Be empathetic by recognising your employees’ emotions and acting with understanding when faced with difficulties.

Good cooperation with external stakeholders can make a project solid, and stimulate the decision-making process. Here are a few ways to better value your stakeholders:

  • Invite them in at regular intervals for a chat;
  • Give them the opportunity to share their opinions;
  • Let them make decisions.

It is also important to take care of your business relationships:

  • Always treat your customers/partners with respect;
  • Respect their time and deadlines, by avoiding last-minute calls for tender, for example;
  • Cultivate a partnership of values, by avoiding greenwashing.
