Lesson 3

Reduce the impact of travel

There is no shortage of alternatives to solo car journeys: walking, cycling, scootering, a wide range of public transport services and carsharing, to name a few. We therefore need to rethink the way we travel to work or to our business meetings to combine relevance, efficiency and, above all, a reduction in our environmental footprint.

How can you reduce the impact of business travel?

To limit your environmental impact when you travel to work, give priority to:

  • Walking.
  • Bicycles and scooters (electric or otherwise).
  • Public transport: bus, streetcar, metro.

And for long-distance travel, or for offices with poor transport links:

  • The train.
  • Carpooling.
  • Car sharing.

For business travel:

  • For longer journeys, take the train rather than the plane.
  • If you have to fly: make your stay longer, take less luggage and limit stopovers.

To reduce the environmental impact of travel, as an organisation:

  • Communicate the assistance available to your employees.
  • Make it easier to adopt more environmentally-friendly means of transport by providing a bicycle storage room, for example.
  • Make utility vehicles (preferably electric) available to employees to encourage carsharing.
  • Suggest teleworking to reduce the need to travel.
